During the exhibition of "There Are Things That I Would Like To Wash Away," participants were asked to approach the pedestal, draw fresh water from a metal wash basin on the left, and choose a bar of soap with which to wash their hands. The eleven bars of soap were made with activated charcoal and embossed with a negatively-coded word, such as Pain, Fear, or Guilt. When finished, the participants discarded their used water into a basin on the right. A lavender scent, and sometimes a black residue, would remain on the hands of the participant.
